Katarina began ice-skating at age five. Her talents soon became evident as she enrolled into a school specifically designed that caters to children who have a passion for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In this school, she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt achieved her breakthrough by finishing second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Since then, her grace and elegance caught everyone's attention. Then she began dominating this particular sport. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' gold medal in figure skating after a close-fought competition. Witt won an even more close contest after four years. The free skater lost however she was awarded the gold medal for her figure that was compulsory as well as the short program. Witt was the first female to win in both male and female figure skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her accomplishments as a movie actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she did not take home a single gold medal, she was awed by fans even with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame occurred in the year 1995.
